Job Description:

General Position Summary

The incumbent will be responsible to provide diagnostic services to the TB patients during the chest camps held at assigned districts. These camps will organize with the help of a mobile screening van as per the Operational Guidelines. The incumbent will work in close coordination with the medical imaging technician in the mobile screening van. The overall job responsibility is to identify the presumptive TB cases and to perform the Xpert MTB Riff test. Preparing a detailed report of each mobile screening camp, and submit it to the Supervisor.

The incumbent will maintain a positive working relationship within the team and with the district health authorities of project districts.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • The incumbent should have a full-time presence at the mobile screening camp for providing Xpert test services to beneficiaries coming to the camp
  • The incumbent will be working 6 days a week and will be moving from one district to another to conducting screening camps for TB patients
  • Record patient information on the Gene Xpert Register including patient contact details, household address, and clinical history.
  • Provides counseling on how to produce an appropriate sputum sample. S/he will encourage the patients to provide a spot specimen for GeneXpert testing.
  • Guide the patient to provide a sputum sample in a designated area that must be well-ventilated
  • Sputum samples will collect from the patients who are suggestive of TB and stored in sputum boxes.
  •  All sputum samples must be labeled properly as per national guidelines
  • Prepare sputum samples for Gene Xpert testing. S/he will perform on spot Xpert MTB/Riff testing and share reports with the patients
  • Guide the patient to go to the doctor attending the chest camp for further assessment
  • Maintain the temperature of sputum samples and cartridges as per national guidelines.
  • Ensure personal and staff safety through proper use of Personal protective equipment.
  • Responsible to wear dosimeter at all time during chest camp as per PNRA recommendations, and after the camp will place it on a safe place and away from X-ray room.
  • Ensure daily, weekly and monthly maintenance of Gene Xpert machine
  • Follow SOPs for regularly checking equipment for malfunction/errors and immediate reporting
  • Ensure that calibration of Gene Xpert machine done well on time
  • Maintain the cartridge log book and  Equipment repair & maintenanace log
  • Keep the equipment neat and clean and avoid dust entry by proper covering the equipment after camp
  • Ensure the safety and security of the Gene Xpert machine and its accessories.
  • Inform the District Field supervisors about the results of the Xpert test.
  • Prepare a monthly statistical record of the screen, presumptive, and positive TB case and submit it to the Supervisor
  • Attend training on the handling of Gene Xpert machine
  • Attend TB DOTS training of paramedics provided according to the National Guidelines
  • Perform other required tasks assigned by the supervisor

Works Directly With: In close coordination with the Regional Coordinator, Senior Technical Officer (ACF), Medical Imaging Technician, and the District Field Supervisor   

Knowledge and Experience 

  • Diploma in medical laboratory technician or F.Sc in medical laboratory technology from a recognized institute
  • 3-year experience of working in clinical /microbiology laboratory.
  • Knowledge about bio-safety in the TB laboratory is desired.
  • Experience working in TB laboratory will be an asset.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English, Urdu, and local language.
