Balochistan, which is half the size of Pakistan, and the least populated, is strategically located, having borders with Afghanistan, Iran and the Arabian Sea. It touches the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan, which borders Afghanistan. Balochistan is half the size of Pakistan and the least populated. The literacy rate is half of that of the rest of Pakistan, and female literacy is even lower, especially in the rural areas. A co-educational university exists in Balochistan, but most young women were not allowed to attend classes, the province being very conservative. This led to the creation of the Sardar Bahadur Khan Womens University, in March 2004, Pakistans third and Balochistans first womens university. Created in an Old Sanatorium the university has a short but a unique history. The literacy rate of the province is the lowest and revolution through education is the need of the hour. Since its inception it has been striving to be the main source of skilled females in Balochistan and endeavoring to bring a cultural revolution by placing an educated lady in every house hold. The university does not have a long history in the arena of education but has taken many strides forward in various dimensions. The university discarded the conventional way of annual system and adopted the more interactive semester system. It is the only university offering semester system in fields of Arts and Sciences in Balochistan. Every effort is directed towards uplifting the level of education. All possible facilities have been provided. Laboratory equipments for science subjects have been imported from around the world to enhance Creation of Knowledge, as research is amongst the prime concerns. The library is equipped with National and International books and research journals. Computerization of the university has been completed to ensure availability of all latest data in every field. Although fresh in the field, various university students have already published their research papers in scientific journals and many such activities are in the pipe line. The university offers Masters Degree in twelve disciplines and four year B.S programs in six subjects. Besides academics the university also believes in educating women about the multi facets of practical life. A Finishing school on the pattern of the Finishing School of Switzerland is a regular department of the university; the school offers short courses in different home management skills. The university has followed an integrated approach for empowerment of women both socially and economically and, therefore, also offers short courses in its own Gem Cutting and Polishing Institute, so that in future the learned skill could be utilized to establish it as a cottage industry. The graph of enrollment at the university is indicative of the trust and recognition it has gained in such a short period of time student body is over 2000.
